One of the last icons of British military history – the famous Avro Vulcan XH558 (“The Spirit of Great Britain”) - is facing its toughest battle to date: The coronavirus pandemic.

As the world navigates its way through the continuing crisis, the charity responsible for her care has embarked on an ambitious fundraising campaign to bring her in from the cold.

Since 2017 she’s sat on the runway at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, when the temporary hangar space rented to house her became unavailable. Now, Vulcan to the Sky Trust is hoping to raise £1.1m to create a new hangar for Vulcan XH558, housing the ‘The Vulcan Experience’ and a ‘Green Technology Hub’ to bring her Cold War legacy to life, preserving this symbol of British heritage for generations to come.

However, fundraising in the middle of a pandemic is no easy feat and could be the toughest battle Vulcan has faced yet, coupled with the untimely passing of Dr Robert Pleming, chief executive of the trust, just weeks ago.

Dr Pleming had dedicated his life to Vulcan and passed away unexpectedly in February, spurring the trust on even more in their efforts to rehome XH558 as his legacy.
